My son was diagnosed with autism when he was 18 months old. Although his childhood continues to be neither easy nor typical, it offers our family unique opportunities to experience the world differently and challenges us to grow in unexpected ways. That’s what I try to capture in this blog.
Although I only have sketchy memories of my life before I became a parent, my career has ranged from from computer programming for Lockheed Martin to musical-theater writing (Ducks and Lovers) to founding a shopping website that automatically donates to charity (ShopForCharityNow.com). If you’ve ever visited PaleyCenter.org, Insideschools.org, or gone to the New York Music Theatre Festival, you’ve probably seen some of my work.
Hello! I just came across your blog in my search on autism support in NYC. Would love an opportunity to chat and pick your brain! Looking to relocate back to NY and am overwhelmed on where to begin. Any help would be so much appreciated!
Hi Nancy,
I would encourage you to reach out to Sarah Birnbaum at New York Special Needs Support (http://nyspecialneeds.com/)–she is well-versed in all the latest special education programs and how to navigate the DOE, which is often a nightmare. Feel free to tell her I sent you–our kids went to pre-K together.
And a great organization to contact is Resources for Children with Special Needs (http://www.resourcesnyc.org/).
I hope all goes well with your move.
